As platelets help stop bleeding, they are effective only for five days. Platelet donations are carried out on a need basis and donors are kept ready accordingly.
There are two types of platelet products:
One unit of RDP contains >5.5X1010 platelets with a volume of 50 to 70 ml. To correct thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), an adult patient requires 6 to 8 units at a time.
One unit of SDP contains >3X1011 platelets with a volume of 200 to 300 ml. A single unit is sufficient as an adult dose.
