Obstetric Ultrasound

In obstetric ultrasound, sound waves are employed to produce images of the baby inside a pregnant mother's uterus. As ionising radiation is not used in the procedure, there are no known harmful effects of this procedure, and it is considered a preferred method to monitor the growth and development of the unborn fetus. Sometimes, a doppler ultrasound is performed as a part of this exam, which involves an evaluation of blood flow in the placenta, umbilical cord, or the fetus.

No special preparation is required before this procedure. You may want to wear a loose-fitting dress or a two piece clothing as only your lower body needs to be exposed for this exam. Do not wear jewellery to the procedure room.

Obstetrical ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive medical investigation that physicians use to diagnose and treat medical conditions related to the female reproductive organs. It is a safe and painless exam during which images of the inside of female reproductive organs are produced using sound waves.

Sometimes a doppler ultrasound is performed as a part of the obstetrical ultrasound. It is a special ultrasound technique during which the movement of materials inside the body is evaluated. It lets the doctor visualise and assess the blood flow through the blood vessels in the body.

Some common uses of obstetrical ultrasound include establishing the existence of a living fetus, estimating the gestational age, diagnosis of congenital fetal anomalies, evaluating the placental and fetal position, determining the presence of multiple pregnancies, determining how much amniotic fluid is there around the baby, check for the cervical opening, and to evaluate the growth and well-being of the fetus. Some gynaecologists order a 3D ultrasound to get a detailed image of the fetus and determine if it is growing normally.

  • It is mostly a noninvasive technique. There are no needles or injections involved.
  • The technique is widely available and less expensive than other imaging methods available.
  • There is no radiation used in the procedure, making it extremely safe.
  • A clear picture of the soft tissues can be derived that may not always be possible with x-rays.
  • It is the preferred imaging technique for diagnosing and monitoring pregnant women and unborn fetuses.
