Tonsils: What do they do, and when should they be removed?

KDAH

Your tonsils are more than just a sore throat target — they’re part of your immune system, acting as the first line of defense against germs that enter through the mouth and nose. But when they become chronically infected or enlarged, they can do more harm than good. Repeated sore throats, difficulty swallowing, snoring, bad breath, or sleep disturbances could be signs of chronic tonsillitis or enlarged tonsils. If you or your child experiences frequent infections (usually 5–7 times a year) or if tonsils are interfering with breathing or daily life, it might be time to consult an ENT specialist. A simple tonsillectomy (surgical removal) can bring lasting relief and improve quality of life.
