Osteopenia: Not quite osteoporosis, but a warning sign you shouldn't ignore!

KDAH

Osteopenia is a condition where your bone density is lower than normal but not low enough to be classified as osteoporosis. Think of it as an early warning sign: your bones are starting to lose strength, but there's still time to act. Many people don’t realize they have it until they experience a fracture or undergo a bone density scan (DEXA scan). Certain groups are more at risk, including women after menopause, individuals with low calcium or vitamin D intake, those with sedentary lifestyles, and people who smoke or consume excessive alcohol. Osteopenia can be managed and even reversed with the right approach. Eating a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, engaging in regular weight-bearing exercises, avoiding smoking, and limiting alcohol can all help strengthen your bones. If you’re over 50 or have risk factors, talk to your doctor about a bone density test. Early detection is key and taking action now can help you prevent osteoporosis and maintain strong, healthy bones for years to come.
